18th century French School, portrait of a lady under the Regency period, circa 1730. Oil on canvas in its 18th century carved and gold leaf gilt wood frame.
Our painting is fascinating : original theme, mysterious symbols that remain to be discovered. Our lady, although richly dressed and styled like an aristocrat with a powdered wig, is obviously not a common person. Her wig adorned with pearls and her transparent dress revealing her chest is extremely sensual. She is making a magic potion or poisoning, pouring a mixture into a cup. On the right, an extraordinary animal (dragon, phoenix or griffin ?) pours into the drink som tears of fire, which leaves no doubt about the esoteric meaning of this portrait.
Our painting could also have been part of a set of 7 paintings showing the deadly sins (showing lust or jealousy ?).
Beautiful piece for a cabinet of curiosities, very rare subject.
