Large mahogany veneered psyche mirror, French Consulate period, early 19th century circa 1800.
High quality production, not stamped but very close to Jacob Freres or Marcion productions (probably made by one of the two).
Created at the end of 18th century, psyche mirrors allowed ladies to see herselves full-length. Psyches were particularly fashionable under Consulate, Empire and Restoration periods. Imperial residences such as Fontainebleau or Compiegne were full of them.
La Mésangère newspaper, instigator of the fashion from 1797 to 1831 lists this type of model in 1802.
Our psyche is in excellent condition: new varnish, finely chiseled bronzes, fresh mercury gilt (ormolu). The back will covered with a silk satin (many colors available upon request).
