19th century French school : portrait of Saint Ferdinand III, King of Spain.
Oil on canvas presented in a beautiful gold leaf gilt frame. Signed and dated E. Richoux 1840.
Etienne Richoux, 19th century painter, is known for works in the Troubadour style Troubadour. The holy king is depicted kneeling in prayer with all the attributes of his office. Very fine and detailed representation. The artist paid much care to the details of the weapons, the helmet, the shield, the ruler's clothes and jewels, but also the passementerie (curtains, tablecloth, cushion, cloak ...).
Our portrait is presented in a beautiful Restoration gold leaf gilt frame.
Ferdinand III, or Saint Ferdinand of Castile, was King of Castille and Toledo from 1217 to 1252, and King of Leon and Galicia from 1230 to 1252. He deeply marked Spain medieval history by finally unifying the kingdoms of Castile and León in 1230, and processing the reconquest of the South of Iberian peninsula. His action against the Moors led him to be canonized in 1671.
The whole set is in very good condition, picture and frame cleaned. Cracks and old restoration. The picture is in very good condition, superb.
