Large engraving set into a Louis XVI style gold leaf gilt wood frame ; Goupil Editions, dated 1878.
It depicts the prodigal child parable after the work of Edouard Dubufe. Musée d'Orsay has the sketch of the painting - which is 12m large - in its collections. Presented at 1866 Exhibition, the original painting was part of the A. Stewart collection, until its sale in New York in 1887. Current location is unknown. That engraving is one of the rare representations of the lost piece.
The scene shows the prodigal son's story in a tryptic : in the center, the rich young man is squandering his fortune in pleasures ; on the left, ruined, he is taking care of the pigs ; on the right, the son comes humbly to ask forgiveness from his father who generously grants him.
Goupil Editions distributed their works at the end of the 19th century in Europe (Paris, London, The Hague, Berlin) and in the United States (New York).
Beautiful, very decorative piece (very large size).
Very good condition ; the gold leaf frame was cleaned by our gilder. Original glass.
