19th century School, large oil on canvas : the marriage proposal. Exceptional Regence style gold leaf gilt frame. Signed of E Hardy and dated 1848.
Our painting is very rich in characters. It takes place in the living room of a castle and shows a marriage proposal in the French Aristocracy during the 1840's.
Very interesting and amusing study of morals of the time : the young officer is represented by his Colonel who is asking the blue lady for her daughter's hand (white-dressed). The young Miss is a bit shy and romantic but surely very rich. The fiance's father accompanies his son, holding his hand and making sure that a notary, sitting at the table, records the conditions of the future marriage contract. The whole family is attending the scene : grandparents, younger brother on his rocking horse with saber and satchel (who does not seem to measure the importance of the scene), the dog playing with a sheet of paper and the servants . The officers wear the uniform of the Horseback Riders. About 1835-1845 (Monarchy of July). The superior officer carries the Legion of Honor and the order of Saint Louis (Arnaud de Gouvion Saint Cyr Expertise).
In excellent condition : the painting is cleaned and presented in a magnificent Regence style frame (museum quality entirely gilt with gold leaf - about 20cm thick). Frame in perfect condition, without any accident.
Large, very decorative piece.
