Rare sterling silver coffee pot, late 18th century beautiful production designed in a Directoire fashion, according to production period. Finely chiseled acanthus, horse head-shaped spout, pine-shaped handle on top of the lid, palm leaves, billy-goat hoof-shaped feet. A lot of hallmarks there, each proving the purity silver stamped at distinct times :
- wild boar large stamp, proving an equivalent to 1st standard between 1793 and 1798. This hallmark was created in 1793 to protect the quality level of silverware after the ancien régime stamps were removed (when French Revolution started). This defines the production period of our coffee pot.
- French hallmark Coq or Cock 1st standard that proves a .950 purity silver, stamped between 1798 and 1809. Controls were often made a posteriori, after Revolution.
- French hallmark old man 1st standard, stamped between 1819 and 1838, that guarantees again the .950 purity silver, together with the proper guarantee stamp from this period.
I cannot read the silversmith stamp. Difficult item to find, particularly in this excellent condition. Silver is shiny, no distortion.
