18th century French school : large portrait of a gentleman sitting in his study - Louis XV period - mid 18th century painting circa 1750 - 1760.

Our character is richly dressed with a silk costume and a taffetas robe. He is sitting under a red velvet canopy in his study, with Rococo style pieces of furniture around, showing his erudition and passion for arts and science with books and a globe in the background.

He is a high-born aristocrat, considering his red heels on the shoes (red heels used to be a sign of nobility under French Ancien Regime, only worn by court people).

Our elegant painting is a perfect illustration of what Talleyrand used to call "18th century sweet life".

Our portrait is very finely executed : facial features are very refined, furniture details and fabrics are meticulously pictured, perfect proportions.

In excellent condition. Set into a rich 19th century gold leaf gilt wood frame - matt and shiny finish. The set in superb.
