Large Louis XVI period Mahogany and ormolu cylinder desk. France circa 1780.
Created at the end of the reign of Louis XV, cylinder desks are mechanical pieces of furniture, which allows - once closed - to keep the work spread on the desktop confidential .
Our cylinder desk opens with a leather-trimmed sliding tray, 6 drawers at the top, 3 small drawers inside the cylinder and under the belt 3 drawers plus a double drawer concealing a chest.
Mounted on oak, our cylinder is a high quality Parisian production but unsigned.
Below details are signs of high quality :
- all sides veneered with a beautiful Cuban mahogany, it was made to be placed in the center of a large room or cabinet (such as in the Camondo's Library in Paris)
- rich gilt bronze trim with fine gold (ormolu)
- some locks are in clover-shaped
Our desk looks like a large and spectacular model, yet it is not the "giant" size - the same size as a large commode (130 x 65cm).
Very good condition, the antique polish - in excellent condition - was preserved and cleaned. Shiny finishing without accidents or lack (except old usual restorations and slots). The original gilt leather was preserved.
