Beautiful pair of Empire andirons, gilt (ormolu) and patinated bronze. Consulate period : late 18th century or circa 1800.
Beautiful model decorated with winged sphinxes sitting on the terrace and vases.
The pattern of our andirons is listed in the book The hour, the fire, the light, The Bronzes of the Mobilier National 1800 - 1870 with variations : same base, same decorations, but ours have a sphinge on the terrace instead of an Egyptian head.
Our pair of andirons have O1360 inventory numbers stamped on the bronze base but also on the cast iron. And also RC topped by an Imperial Crown & 2444 26.
Up to date, our research could not identify which (Imperial ?) palace it comes from. It could be a residence managed by the Mobilier Imperial during the First Empire in Italy, but without certainty.
Beautiful model, historical provenance. Matt and shiny gilt attenuated ; we had the gilt remade with fine gold (ormolu) on the decorations applied to the facade.
