Pair of antique French sterling silver salt cellars, late French Directoire / Consulate period (late 18th century). Very fine work, beautiful pattern, held by a tripod structure picturing three Egyptian women (chest and feet). High quality of chasing, with many fine details - especially the woman's hair and clothes, much finely chiseled. Original glass, star-shaped cut in the bottom.
3 hallmarks :
- 1st coq or cock, French hallmark used between 1798 and 1809, equivalent to Minerva 1st standard (meaning a 950/1000 purity silver)
- medium guarantee hallmark in use at that time
- Charles-Louis Bourgeois silversmith's stamp, active in Paris from 1780 to 1806
.
In excellent condition. A small fissure on a silver leaf, that has probably always been there.
